چکیده

Figure 1 summarizes the various cloud variables and their interactions. Precipitating cloud species are distinguished from non-precipitating species, and the liquid phase is distinguished from the ice phase. The size of the nonprecipitating cloud particles (which influences both the cloud radiative properties and the conversion of nonprecipitating cloud species to precipitating species) is determined by predicting both the mass and number concentrations of each species. permissible time step of a bulk cloud microphysics parameterization originally developed for mesoscale cloud models (Tripoli and Cotton 1980, Cotton et al. 1982 and 1986, Meyers et al. 1992). These approximations are

The Explicit-Cloud Pparameterized-Pollutant hybrid approach for aerosol--cloud interactions in multiscale modeling framework models: tracer transport results

All estimates of aerosol indirect effects on the global energy balance have either completely neglected the influence of aerosol on convective clouds or treated the influence in a highly parameterized manner. Embedding cloud-resolving models (CRMs) within each grid cell of a global model provides a multiscale modeling framework for treating both the influence of aerosols on convective as well a...

Cloud Parameter izat ion for Climate Modeling: Status and Prospects

Randall, D.A., 1989. Cloud Parameterization for climate modeling: status and prospects. Atmos. Res., 23: 245-361. The current status of cloud parameterization research is reviewed. It is emphasized that the upper tropospheric stratiform clouds associated with deep convection are both physically important and poorly parameterized in current models. Emerging parameterizations are described in gen...

The role of shallow convection in the water and energy cycles of the atmosphere

The Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM4) is used to study the role of shallow convection in the hydrologic and energy cycles of the atmosphere. Sensitivity tests with AGCM4 show a marked effect of the parameterization of shallow convection in the model. In particular, including the parameterization of shallow convection produces consid...

Cloud Types Simulated by the NCEP GFS Model

Clouds and their interactions with radiation is recognized by the most recent IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; 2001) report as the greatest uncertainty in future projections of climate, and, despite the considerable improvement of the physical realism of cloud representation in general circulation models, representation of clouds and their feedbacks is still the weakest componen...

Evaluation of a GCM subgrid cloud-radiation interaction parameterization using cloud-resolving model simulations

[1] The mosaic approach of Liang and Wang (1997) for the general circulation model (GCM) parameterization of subgrid cloud-radiation interactions is evaluated against the validated cloud-resolving model (CRM) simulation of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) intensive observation period (IOP, June 22–July 17, 1997) at the Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. The CRM-generated cloud statist...
